The New York Knicks are NBA champions again, ending one of basketball’s longest waits with a dramatic 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals.
Led by a magnificent 45-point performance from Jalen Brunson, the Knicks sealed the series 4-1 and captured their first NBA championship since 1973. It was a night of pressure, history and emotion, but New York found a way once again, fighting back from another difficult position to finish the job in San Antonio.
The Spurs had looked ready to extend the series for large parts of the contest. San Antonio built a 16-point lead in the second quarter and were still in control during the third, but the Knicks refused to fade. New York entered the fourth quarter trailing 72-65 before producing a championship-winning final period, outscoring the Spurs 29-18 when the season was on the line.
Brunson was the clear difference. The Knicks guard scored 29 of his 45 points in the second half, taking control of the game with fearless drives, clutch shooting and repeated trips to the free-throw line. His performance not only carried New York to victory, but also secured him the NBA Finals MVP award after a superb series.
Mikal Bridges added 14 points, while Josh Hart delivered another high-energy performance with 13 points and 11 rebounds. OG Anunoby contributed 11 points, and the Knicks also received vital rebounding work from Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, who both pulled down 10 boards.

For the Spurs, Dylan Harper led the scoring with 25 points, while Victor Wembanyama finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. San Antonio had its chances, but missed opportunities late in the game and New York’s superior composure in the fourth quarter proved decisive.
The result completed a remarkable Finals story for the Knicks. New York had already stunned San Antonio in Game 4 by coming back from 29 points down to win 107-106, taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. Game 5 followed a familiar pattern, with the Spurs again building an advantage before the Knicks responded with resilience, defensive grit and Brunson’s brilliance.
For New York, this championship is more than just a trophy. It ends 53 years of frustration, false dawns and heartbreak for one of the NBA’s most passionate fanbases. The Knicks, champions in 1970 and 1973, have now added a third NBA title to their history.
For San Antonio, the defeat will hurt deeply, especially after leading in all four of their losses in the series. But with Wembanyama, Harper and a young core, the Spurs leave the Finals with proof that their future remains bright.
This night, however, belonged to the Knicks. After more than five decades of waiting, New York basketball finally returned to the top of the NBA.
