Qatar produced one of the early dramatic moments of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Boualem Khoukhi’s stoppage-time late header earned them a memorable 1-1 draw against a dominant Switzerland in their Group B opener.
The Swiss breakthrough came in the 17th minute after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the area. Embolo stepped up confidently and sent Abunada the wrong way from the penalty spot, giving Switzerland the perfect start.
From there, Switzerland controlled possession and repeatedly pushed Qatar back. Dan Ndoye and Ruben Vargas were heavily involved in the attacking phases, while Granit Xhaka helped dictate the tempo from midfield. Switzerland moved the ball well and looked the more polished side, but their finishing let them down badly.
As the game entered stoppage time, Switzerland appeared to be closing in on all three points. Instead, Qatar found one last surge. Homam Ahmed delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and Khoukhi attacked it brilliantly, sending his header into the net to make it 1-1 and change the mood of the entire stadium.
The match looked to be heading towards a controlled Swiss victory after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty, but the Qatari’s refused to disappear from the contest. Deep into added time, with just seconds reamining befor the final whistle, Boualem Khoukhi rose inside the penalty area and forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Qatari players and supporters, who were over come with joy and new found strength.
For Qatar, this was more than just a draw. It was their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup, a result that carried huge emotional weight after their difficult 2022 campaign on home soil, where they lost all three group-stage matches.
Switzerland, meanwhile, will see this as two points dropped. Murat Yakin’s side dominated large spells of the match, created enough chances to win comfortably, and finished with a staggering 26 attempts on goal. Yet their failure to kill the game allowed Qatar to stay alive, defend with discipline, and wait for one final moment of greatness.
witzerland will be frustrated because this was a match they should have won. Their dominance, shot count and territory all pointed towards victory, but football often punishes wastefulness. They now face Bosnia and Herzegovina knowing they cannot afford another careless finish. With Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also drawing 1-1, every team in the group now sits on one point after the opening round of matches.
For Switzerland, this was a warning. For Qatar, it was a night of history.
