Foreign debt under NPP has exceeded US$1.85 billion outside IMF funding, according to Finance Ministry reports tabled in Parliament.
Foreign debt under NPP has exceeded US$1.85 billion outside International Monetary Fund loans since the National People’s Power government came to office, according to official reports tabled in Parliament.
The figures were presented by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs in response to a question raised by Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara.
According to the information submitted, Sri Lanka received more than US$1,854 million in foreign loans during the period from the conclusion of the last presidential election in 2024 up to May 5 this year.
However, the reports note that these funds were not obtained through new agreements signed by the current government.
Instead, the loan disbursements were received under contracts already signed for 18 ongoing projects that had been in operation before the previous presidential election.
The foreign loan assistance, obtained through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, has come from countries including Japan, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands.
The disclosure is likely to draw further political attention as questions continue over debt management, foreign borrowing, and the government’s economic direction outside the IMF programme.
