Sweden vs Tunisia ended in a 5-1 World Cup statement as Yasin Ayari scored twice and Sweden surged to the top of Group F after a ruthless win in Monterrey.
The fixture had been expected to produce a tight contest, mainly because Tunisia arrived with a strong defensive reputation after an impressive qualifying campaign. Instead, Sweden turned the night into a show of force, delivering a ruthless attacking performance that immediately lifted them to the top of Group F.
Yasin Ayari was the standout player with two superb goals, while Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and substitute Mattias Svanberg also scored. Tunisia’s only reply came from Omar Rekik, whose first-half header briefly offered hope before Sweden took total control after the break.
Sweden made the ideal start in the seventh minute after Tunisia goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh failed to handle pressure from Isak. The ball eventually dropped to Ayari, and the midfielder punished the error with a powerful finish to put Sweden in front.
That early goal shaped a difficult night for Tunisia. They had arrived with confidence, but Sweden’s speed, pressing and movement quickly exposed weaknesses in their back line. Whenever Tunisia tried to move forward, Sweden looked dangerous on the counterattack.
That threat appeared again in the 30th minute. Sweden won possession deep inside their own half before Gyokeres released Isak down the left. The striker drove forward, cut inside and finished calmly past Chamakh to make it 2-0.
At that point, Sweden looked in full control, but Tunisia found a route back before halftime. Rekik produced a fine glancing header in the 43rd minute, scoring with Tunisia’s first effort on target and giving them a lifeline heading into the interval.
For a brief spell, the match carried fresh uncertainty. Tunisia had reduced the gap, and Sweden needed to avoid allowing the game to become emotional or careless. Potter’s side answered with maturity, holding their shape and waiting for the right moments to strike again.
The third goal came in the 59th minute when Isak and Gyokeres finally combined with precision. Isak stole possession and set up his strike partner, who finished simply to make it 3-1 and restore Sweden’s two-goal cushion.
That goal damaged Tunisia’s resistance. Sweden looked stronger, sharper and more confident as the second half moved on, while Tunisia struggled badly to recover from their defensive mistakes.
Svanberg then made an immediate impact from the bench in the 84th minute. His goal was initially checked for offside, but after a VAR review, it was allowed to stand, giving Sweden a commanding 4-1 lead.
Ayari completed the scoring deep into stoppage time with another brilliant strike from outside the box. It was the perfect finish to a dominant individual display from a player who controlled the game with energy, composure and quality.
For Sweden, this was far more than an opening victory. It was their biggest World Cup scoring performance since 1938 and a clear reminder that they can be a serious threat in this tournament. After a difficult route to qualification, this result will give Potter’s squad enormous belief.
The attacking partnership between Isak and Gyokeres was one of Sweden’s biggest positives. Both forwards caused constant problems, and their movement created space throughout the match. With Ayari also stepping forward from midfield, Sweden carried danger from several areas of the pitch.
Tunisia, meanwhile, will be deeply disappointed. They had built their reputation on defensive organisation, but this performance was filled with costly errors. Chamakh endured a difficult night, the back line looked vulnerable, and Sweden punished almost every major mistake.
Rekik’s goal gave Tunisia one encouraging moment, but it could not hide the wider problems. They now need a strong response in their next match, because another defeat could put their World Cup hopes in serious danger.
Sweden move forward with confidence at the top of Group F after Japan and the Netherlands drew 2-2 earlier in the day. Their next challenge will be tougher, but this five-goal performance has already forced the rest of the group to take notice.
For Tunisia, this was a painful lesson. For Sweden, it was a dream start and a powerful statement of intent.
