Gotabhaya Rajapaksa arrest fears grow as the former President seeks a Court of Appeal order linked to Easter Sunday investigations.
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa arrest concerns have reached the Court of Appeal after the former President filed legal action linked to investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday suicide bombings.
Based on investigations connected to the Easter Sunday attacks, former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has asked court to suspend the possibility of his arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act.
He has requested the Court of Appeal, the country’s high court second only to the Supreme Court, to issue a writ of prohibition, or restraining order, preventing his arrest.
The writ petition has been filed through Attorney Sanath Wijewardane and has named three individuals as respondents.
Accordingly, the Inspector General of Police, former Criminal Investigation Department Director Shani Abeysekara, and the Officer-in-Charge of the department, Madhawa Gunawardhana, have been named as respondents in the case.
In connection with these investigations, a foreign travel ban has already been imposed on Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, preventing him from leaving the country.
Former Director of State Intelligence Suresh Sallay is also currently being detained and questioned under detention orders.
