Mexico seal Group A as Luis Romo capitalises on a goalkeeping error to secure a 1-0 World Cup victory over South Korea in Guadalajara.
Mexico sealed their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after Luis Romo capitalised on a costly South Korean goalkeeping error to secure a tense 1-0 victory in Guadalajara.
The co-hosts entered the Group A contest knowing a second consecutive win would place them in command of the section after opening their campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa. South Korea had also made a winning start by defeating Czechia 2-1, turning the meeting into an early battle for control of the group.
Mexico carried the greater attacking threat during an energetic first half but repeatedly found South Korea’s defensive shape difficult to break. Raúl Jiménez worked across the forward line, while the hosts attempted to stretch their opponents and create openings around the penalty area.
South Korea remained disciplined and looked capable of frustrating the home side. Kim Min-jae helped organise the defence, while the Asian team attempted to threaten through quick transitions whenever Mexico lost possession.
The decisive moment arrived five minutes after halftime. Jiménez directed a header towards goal, but goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu failed to hold the attempt and spilled the ball into a dangerous area.
Romo reacted before the South Korean defence could recover, lifting the loose ball into the unguarded net to score the only goal of the contest. The midfielder’s alertness transformed an otherwise routine save into the moment that decided the match.
South Korea increased the pressure as the second half progressed and came close to rescuing a point during a frantic finish. Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced an important late double save, preserving the narrow advantage as the hosts came under their strongest spell of pressure.
Mexico were forced to defend rather than entertain in the closing stages, but their composure ensured that Romo’s goal was enough. The result gave the co-hosts six points from two matches and confirmed their place in the expanded Round of 32.
It also maintained Mexico’s perfect defensive record after two group games. While the performance lacked the comfort of their opening win, the ability to survive sustained pressure provided another encouraging sign for a team carrying major expectations on home soil.
South Korea remain firmly involved in the qualification race despite the defeat. Their opening victory leaves them with three points before their final Group A fixture against South Africa.
Mexico will complete the group stage against Czechia on June 24. With qualification secured and control of the group established, the co-hosts can now manage their squad while attempting to carry maximum momentum into the knockout rounds.
