Rumesh Pathirage Diamond League victory in Lausanne came by just nine centimetres as the Sri Lankan edged Neeraj Chopra with 88.14m.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his outstanding 2026 season by winning the men’s javelin at the Lausanne Diamond League with a throw of 88.14 metres.
Pathirage edged India’s Neeraj Chopra by just nine centimetres, with the Olympic champion producing a season-best 88.05m to finish second at Athletissima in Lausanne.
The narrow victory was Pathirage’s third Diamond League win of the season, further strengthening his position among the world’s leading javelin throwers.
Only a few months ago, the 23-year-old delivered one of the biggest performances in Sri Lankan athletics history when he threw 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League. That effort set a new Sri Lankan national record and also placed him among the top javelin throwers on the world all-time list.
He later followed that success with another Diamond League victory in Doha, where he won with a throw of 88.68m.
Another Big Win Over Elite Opposition
Pathirage’s success in Lausanne carried extra significance because of the quality of the opposition.
Chopra, a Tokyo Olympic champion and former world champion, pushed the Sri Lankan all the way with his 88.05m effort. However, Pathirage’s 88.14m remained enough to secure victory.
The result adds another chapter to what is developing into an exciting South Asian javelin rivalry.
Pathirage has also enjoyed success outside the Diamond League this year. He won gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, again finishing ahead of Chopra.
For Sri Lankan athletics, his rise has become one of the country’s biggest sporting stories of the year.
With another Diamond League victory now secured, Pathirage’s attention will turn towards the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels, where he will look to complete an already remarkable campaign with another major international title.
