A dog named Subramaniyan on a foot pilgrimage from Jaffna to Kataragama was attacked and abused by a deranged man, leading to widespread outrage and the swift arrest of the suspect.
The incident took place on the evening of June 27, 2026, in the Kalmunai area. According to police reports, the Kalmunai Headquarters Police arrested a 21-year-old suspect after receiving a formal complaint regarding the abuse.
Subramaniyan had captured the hearts of many, having loyally walked a staggering distance of nearly 450 kilometers alongside Hindu devotees participating in the traditional Kataragama Pada Yatra. Various Hindu organizations and social media users have fiercely condemned the attack, labeling it a completely inhumane act.
