Socceroos reach World Cup knockouts after a tense 0-0 Paraguay draw seals second place in Group D and keeps both teams alive.
The Socceroos reached the World Cup knockout stage after a tense 0-0 draw with Paraguay, securing second place in Group D and leaving the South Americans to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium had been billed as a winner-take-all battle for the cleaner route into the round of 32. Australia entered knowing a draw would be enough to progress automatically, while Paraguay needed victory to overtake the Socceroos and avoid depending on the wider third-place table.
Those stakes shaped the match from the opening whistle. Australia were the more controlled side early, keeping their structure compact and avoiding unnecessary risks in possession. Paraguay, missing the freedom to gamble too early, defended deep and waited for openings that rarely arrived.
The contest became increasingly physical. Tackles broke up the rhythm, set pieces failed to produce clear openings and both teams appeared conscious that a single mistake could undo their tournament. The sellout crowd tried to lift the atmosphere, but the match struggled to generate sustained attacking momentum.
Australia produced more attempts overall, but few forced genuine saves. Tony Popovic’s side looked organised rather than expansive, prioritising field position, second balls and defensive security. Paraguay’s first corner did not arrive until the 53rd minute, underlining how difficult they found it to apply pressure.
As the second half progressed, the draw became more valuable to both teams. Australia knew it protected second place, while Paraguay understood that a point could still be enough to qualify given the expanded format. Both coaches later rejected suggestions that their teams had settled for the result, but the tactical caution was obvious.
The final minutes brought tension rather than clear chances. Paraguay pushed slightly higher, but Australia’s back line dealt with crosses and loose balls. The Socceroos avoided panic, slowed the game when possible and reached the final whistle with the result they needed.
For Australia, the draw marked a third appearance in the knockout phase and continued their growth as a tournament team. It may not have been pretty, but it was disciplined, mature and effective. For Paraguay, the point ultimately preserved their campaign and set up a round-of-32 meeting with Germany.
Australia move on to face Egypt in Dallas, while Paraguay prepare for Germany. The match will not be remembered for entertainment, but for both teams it achieved the essential World Cup objective: survival.
