Cape Verde hold Saudi Arabia 0-0, finish second in Group H and become the smallest nation to reach a World Cup knockout round.
Cape Verde completed one of the great World Cup group-stage stories by drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia and qualifying for the round of 32 in their debut tournament.
The Blue Sharks arrived in Houston unbeaten but still uncertain of their fate. They had already held Spain 0-0 and fought back to draw 2-2 with Uruguay, leaving them with a chance to make history if they avoided defeat against Saudi Arabia and other results held.
Saudi Arabia also had a route into contention, but they needed victory. That made the match a test of nerve as much as football. Cape Verde defended with discipline, trusting goalkeeper Vozinha and the defensive line that had already frustrated more experienced opponents.
The first half was tense and cautious. Saudi Arabia had the greater urgency but struggled to break through Cape Verde’s organisation. Vozinha produced an important save in first-half stoppage time, holding a header from Mohamed Kanno to protect the clean sheet.
Cape Verde carried some threat of their own. Kevin Pina went close from distance after halftime, sending an effort just over the crossbar. The African island nation knew one goal might settle the match, but also understood that defensive control was their clearest route to survival.
Saudi Arabia pushed again in the second half, but Vozinha remained central to the story. He produced another important stop from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat in the 66th minute, then denied Abdullah Al-Hamdan in stoppage time as Saudi Arabia searched desperately for the goal that would extend their campaign.
Cape Verde nearly stole victory at the end when Nuno da Costa sent a shot wide in the final seconds. It did not matter. Moments later, Spain’s victory over Uruguay confirmed Cape Verde would finish second in Group H with three points from three draws.
The achievement is extraordinary. Cape Verde, with a population of just over half a million, became the smallest nation to reach a men’s World Cup knockout round. Their qualification was built not on luck, but on discipline, resilience and belief.
Saudi Arabia exit with two points, level with Uruguay but bottom on goal difference. Cape Verde now face defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3, turning their fairytale into a meeting with Lionel Messi and one of the game’s greatest teams.
