Mahinda Rajapaksa retirement talk ends as the former president says he will stay in politics and reveal the SLPP candidate later.
KANDY, Sri Lanka — Mahinda Rajapaksa retirement speculation ended Sunday after the former president said he has no plan to leave politics, despite looming bribery investigations.
Rajapaksa spoke to reporters after visiting the Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth, on Sunday morning.
He said the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) remains ready to present its next presidential candidate when the public demands it.
When reporters asked about the SLPP candidate for the upcoming presidential election, Rajapaksa said the nominee running under the “Pohottuwa” or lotus bud symbol would be revealed at the right time.
“I will never step down or retire from politics,” Rajapaksa said.
He added that he would continue working with the public. He also said he personally believes the work he has completed for the country so far remains insufficient.
During the Kandy visit, the former president also met Pradeep Nilanga Dela, the Diyawadana Nilame, or lay custodian, of the Temple of the Tooth.
Former Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa was also present.
For the SLPP, the remarks keep the question of leadership and succession open. However, Rajapaksa’s message was clear: Mahinda Rajapaksa retirement is not part of his political plan.
