Negombo Prison officer killings face fresh scrutiny after reports linked the violence to a gate shooting, drug trafficking and inmate power struggles.
The Negombo Prison officer killings have taken a darker turn after new claims emerged about the violence that left eight officers dead during the clash.
The wider incident claimed 28 lives and exposed serious concerns about security, discipline and organised criminal influence inside the prison.
The Mee Masso YouTube channel reported several disturbing details about the attack. According to its account, the confrontation was not random.
Instead, the violence allegedly developed from a drug trafficking operation and a power struggle among inmates.
Negombo Prison Officer Killings Follow Gate Shooting
Investigators reportedly found that officers attached to the “Prison Police” unit became the main targets after a shot was fired near the main iron gate.
Inmates had allegedly attempted to break through the gate during the unrest. An officer then fired to stop them from forcing their way through.
After the shooting, officers entered the prison to control the situation. However, inmates who had gained access launched a brutal attack against them.
Reports identified “Katuwellegoda Suresh” and his group as being at the centre of the dispute between prisoners and officers over discipline inside the facility.
The violence then escalated rapidly.
One officer’s head was allegedly smashed against a sink. Other victims suffered torture and severe mutilation, including injuries to their genital areas.
Inmates reportedly used flower pots, iron pipes and several other objects during the killings.
CID and Prisons Department Expand Investigation
The Criminal Investigation Department and the Department of Prisons have launched extensive inquiries into the incident.
Investigators are examining the events leading to the clash, the identities of those involved and whether the violence formed part of a planned criminal operation.
The inmates also allegedly destroyed important documents and equipment inside the prison during the unrest.
Authorities are expected to submit further reports to the Negombo Magistrate’s Court as the investigation progresses.
The latest claims have intensified public debate about the safety of Sri Lanka’s prisons, the influence of organised criminals and the protection provided to officers working inside high-risk facilities.
The investigation must now determine who organised the violence, how the confrontation escalated and which inmates directly participated in the Negombo Prison officer killings.
