Sri Lankans prefer China in a Pew survey, with 72% viewing Beijing favorably as global attitudes shift away from the United States.
Sri Lankans prefer China over the United States, according to an attitudes survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Center.
Why Sri Lankans Prefer China
The findings mark a shift in international public opinion. Pew conducted the study between February and May, collecting views from more than 42,000 people across 36 countries.
The final results show that most countries in the study now view China more favorably than the United States. This is the first time Pew has recorded such a reversal during roughly 20 years of tracking attitudes.
The research also indicates that Chinese President Xi Jinping receives higher global approval and appreciation than US President Donald Trump.
In Sri Lanka, 72% of respondents expressed a favorable view of China. Meanwhile, support for China reached 90% in neighboring Pakistan, the highest level recorded among the 36 countries surveyed.
The findings also revealed a notable result in Israel, traditionally one of Washington’s strongest allies. According to the survey, 81% of Israeli respondents expressed a preference for China.
Together, the figures point to a change in how people across several regions view Beijing and Washington, with Sri Lanka forming part of the wider shift.
