Pallegama Hemarathna DNA findings reportedly link a biological sample from a rug to the former Atamasthanadhipathi in an ongoing abuse case.
A Pallegama Hemarathna DNA finding has reportedly emerged as a significant development in the investigation into allegations that the former Atamasthanadhipathi of Anuradhapura abused a minor girl.
Mee Massoo TV reported that investigators tested biological material found on a rug taken into police custody from the location where the alleged offence occurred.
According to the report, the sample matched the DNA profile of Pallegama Hemarathna Thero.
The victim had earlier stated in her testimony that, after the alleged abuse, the Thero wiped semen using the rug.
If accurately reported, the DNA finding could therefore corroborate an important part of her account. However, the allegation of abuse remains a matter for the courts to determine.
Investigators also reportedly discovered several long strands of hair in the bathroom of the residence where the Thero was staying.
Mee Massoo TV said subsequent DNA testing showed that those strands did not belong to the victim.
The report states that this has raised questions over whether other women may have visited the location. However, the presence of unidentified hair alone does not establish who those individuals were or why they may have been there.
Earlier reports connected to the case had stated that investigators found no biological samples on the victim’s undergarments.
Legal experts cited in connection with the case believe the latest Pallegama Hemarathna DNA report could nevertheless become important evidence as proceedings continue.
The Attorney General’s Department has reportedly given special attention to the new material.
The case is scheduled to be recalled on January 08 next year.
The Anuradhapura Magistrate has also ordered investigators to submit a report concerning allegations that the Thero arrived at court discreetly in vehicles with darkened windows.
The latest developments add another forensic dimension to a case already drawing considerable public attention. However, the final legal significance of the DNA evidence, testimony and other material will be determined through the judicial process.
