The Chula Padmendra death has shocked Sri Lanka’s fashion and entertainment community, with the veteran model and actress passing away suddenly at the age of 46.
Chula Padmendra, also known as Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana, was a prominent figure across Sri Lanka’s fashion, modelling, film and television industries.
Sudden Passing After Colombo Event
The grand finale of Universal Woman Sri Lanka 2026 was held in Colombo last night, August 30. The national competition evaluates women’s leadership, personality and professional competence.
Padmendra served as the National Director and Chief Training Instructor of the event.
She reportedly passed away suddenly after returning home following a friendly gathering held after the successful conclusion of the programme.
The exact cause behind the Chula Padmendra death has not yet been confirmed. A post-mortem examination is currently underway.
More Than Two Decades in Fashion
Padmendra played a pioneering role in taking Sri Lankan fashion onto the international stage.
In 2006, she brought recognition to Sri Lanka by winning the International Media Award at the “Miss Tourism Model of the World” competition held in Tanzania.
During more than two decades in the fashion and catwalk industry, she also helped develop a new generation of models.
Through “Chulpadmendra Catwalk Studio,” she provided training and guidance to numerous newcomers entering the modelling industry.
Career in Film and Television
Beyond modelling, Padmendra established herself as an actress.
She contributed to several cinematic productions, including “Gindari 2” (Asani Vasi), as well as a number of popular television productions.
Her portrayals of complex and powerful characters attracted attention from audiences and critics.
Outside the entertainment industry, she was also known as a courageous personality who stood against injustice and supported causes she believed in.
News of the Chula Padmendra death has prompted expressions of grief from veterans of Sri Lanka’s fashion and arts industries, along with members of her fan community.
Arrangements for her final rites are expected to be announced in due course.
