Sri Lanka Oscars 2027 submissions are now open as the National Film Corporation begins selecting the country’s International Feature Film entry.
The Sri Lanka Oscars 2027 journey has officially begun, with filmmakers invited to submit entries for selection as the country’s International Feature Film representative.
The process will identify the most suitable Sri Lankan production for submission to the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place in 2027.
The development opens a major opportunity for Sri Lankan filmmakers seeking recognition at the Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscars and regarded as one of world cinema’s most prestigious honours.
Speaking at a special media conference at the Government Department of Information, Sri Lanka National Film Corporation Chairman and veteran film director Sudath Mahadivulwewa announced the commencement of the official selection process.
He said approval from the Oscar organisers followed continuous diplomatic and organisational efforts carried out over an extended period to secure official Sri Lankan representation.
Sri Lanka Oscars 2027 and the International Feature Film Category
The Academy Awards are organised by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, known as AMPAS.
The awards ceremony was first held in 1929 and has since become one of the most recognised events in international cinema.
The International Feature Film category is specifically dedicated to films produced outside the United States whose principal dialogue is not in English.
Through this category, the Academy recognises outstanding films representing different cultures, languages and cinematic traditions from around the world.
Each participating country can submit only one official film.
That production must be chosen through a selection process conducted by an officially recognised national committee.
For Sri Lanka, a nine-member Sri Lanka National Oscar Selection Committee, known as NOSCSL, has now been appointed.
The committee consists of nine veterans from the film industry.
Members will view and evaluate the submitted films before selecting the country’s official entry through a voting process.
Application Dates and Selection Timeline
Applications for the Sri Lanka Oscars 2027 selection process will be accepted from August 24, 2026, until September 21, 2026.
The officially selected Sri Lankan film is scheduled to be announced on September 28, 2026.
Applications should be submitted through the email address office.noscsl@gmail.com.
Further information is available through the official website of the Sri Lanka National Film Corporation.
The selection committee will consider eligible submissions before deciding which production will represent Sri Lanka in the International Feature Film category.
The process creates a formal pathway for Sri Lankan filmmakers to place their work before the Academy’s international awards system.
Film Industry Officials Attend Launch
Several senior film industry officials attended the special media conference announcing the initiative.
They included National Film Corporation Board Member Wasantha Kotuwellla and General Manager Ruwan Premaveera.
Deputy General Manager Lanka Dharmawickrama was also present.
Chairman of the Public Film Approval Board Anuruddha Jayasinghe and Foreign Film Festival Coordinator Uditha Lakmal Kahandawaarachchi also participated.
The initiative marks a significant opportunity for Sri Lankan cinema after several decades of domestic filmmaking history.
It provides filmmakers with a formal chance to present Sri Lanka’s artistic identity, storytelling traditions and cinematic talent before an international audience.
For the local industry, the Sri Lanka Oscars 2027 selection process could represent the beginning of a new chapter, giving one Sri Lankan film the opportunity to carry the country’s name into the world’s most prominent film awards arena.
