The All Ceylon Essential Food Wholesale and Retail Trade Businessmen’s Association has called on the President to take immediate action to address the ongoing rice crisis in Sri Lanka. According to the association, although the government has set a controlled price of Rs. 220 per kilogram of rice, mill owners are selling rice at prices starting from Rs. 230 and above, exacerbating the issue for consumers.
The association has proposed that the government consider importing rice from India as a viable solution to ease the burden on the local market. They argue that by importing rice and providing it to the public at a subsidized rate, the government can stabilize prices and ensure affordability for all citizens.
Highlighting the cost advantage, the association noted that a kilogram of rice can be imported from India at approximately Rs. 135. This would allow the government to offer rice at significantly lower prices compared to current market rates, alleviating pressure on consumers and addressing the supply gap.
The association emphasized the urgency of the matter, pointing out that immediate action is required to prevent further strain on the population, especially amidst rising costs of living. They urged the government to prioritize the importation plan and ensure that the distribution process remains efficient and fair.
