Colombo, Sri Lanka – India and Japan are exploring a $1.7 million investment to construct an aerospace launch pad in the Hambantota district, marking a major step toward Sri Lanka’s entry into the global space industry.
If successful, the project is expected to create approximately 4,000 new jobs for Sri Lankans. Japan has shown strong interest, with a government-affiliated space company, Astro Launch, conducting a feasibility study in Sri Lanka. A Japanese delegation has already arrived to assess technical qualifications for the initiative.
India is also reportedly considering aerospace investments in Hambantota, recognizing the economic potential of the project, which could generate billions of dollars in revenue.
Experts highlight that Hambantota, Kirinda, and Yala are prime locations for space operations due to their low gravitational influence and proximity to the sea, making them ideal for rocket launches.
The Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port are expected to play a crucial role in supplying logistics and infrastructure for these aerospace projects.
