Colombo, Sri Lanka – Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne has defended the ongoing census of toque macaques, parrots, and peacocks, stating that while 100% accuracy may not be possible, efforts are being made to achieve at least 90% reliable data.
Responding to media criticism about the brief five-minute timeframe allotted for counting the animals, Karunaratne explained that a longer duration, such as half an hour, is not feasible since these animals do not remain stationary.
He further justified the decision to conduct the census in the morning, emphasizing that the animals are most visible before the midday heat. Additionally, Saturday was chosen for the census as it is a holiday, allowing for greater participation.
The Deputy Minister also stated that landowners residing in Colombo or other areas will require representatives to conduct the count on their properties, including at schools and other public spaces.
Karunaratne made these remarks during a media briefing, reaffirming the government’s commitment to gathering accurate wildlife population data despite logistical challenges.
