Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody has clarified that the proposed wind power project with India’s Adani Group has not been canceled, despite speculation.
Speaking at the inaugural Ministerial Consultative Committee on Energy of the 10th Parliament, the Minister addressed concerns raised by Members of Parliament regarding the project. He explained that the pricing of Adani’s power project had been deemed high, leading the Cabinet to review the proposal.
The Sri Lankan Board of Investment (BOI) had previously informed Adani’s parent company in India that it was withdrawing from the project. However, the Minister stated that discussions had since taken place with Adani’s Sri Lankan office, and a letter had been sent requesting further consideration of the matter. A response is expected within two weeks, after which alternative options may be explored if necessary.
Minister Jayakody also emphasized that future projects of this nature would be executed strictly through Government-to-Government (G2G) agreements and competitive procurement processes.
The meeting also addressed concerns over workforce shortages at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), particularly the loss of engineers who migrated abroad during the economic crisis. Officials assured that Cabinet approval has been granted to recruit new engineers in three phases, with the first batch expected to join soon.
Discussions further covered unexpected power outages, with officials explaining that even minor fluctuations could destabilize the system. They highlighted efforts to stabilize the grid using alternative energy sources, such as solar power.
Additionally, concerns were raised regarding poor streetlight maintenance. The Committee stressed the need for better coordination between local authorities and the CEB to address this issue efficiently. Minister Jayakody stated that a policy framework for streetlight management would be finalized within two months.
The session also included discussions on the Ministry’s responsibilities at provincial, district, and regional levels. Several Members of Parliament and committee members participated in the meeting.
