MP Ashoka Ranwala stated that he attended a function at Henegama College as an alumnus, responding to concerns raised over his presence at the event. He emphasized that he was invited by the school’s alumni association and has consistently supported the school during past gatherings.
Speaking to the media, Ranwala clarified that there is no law prohibiting politicians from attending school functions and that he had coordinated with the school principal before participating.
However, during a Parliamentary session, Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne presented a different explanation, stating that Ranwala attended the event in his capacity as a former Speaker, the head of a constitutional body, and not as a political representative.
The conflicting statements have raised questions about the nature of Ranwala’s participation and whether it aligns with the government’s position on politicians attending school events.
