The southern crown jewel of Sri Lanka Galle, a city celebrated for its timeless architecture, rich colonial history, and stunning coastal charm is quietly sliding into chaos as officials remain asleep at the wheel.
Once hailed as one of the most picturesque and tourist-friendly cities in Asia, Galle is now suffering from an escalating crisis: unauthorized structures and vendors have seized control of its main access routes, including key entrances from the Southern Expressway. The result? Tourists are turning away. Locals are fed up. And the city’s global reputation is under threat.
“This is more than an eyesore—it’s an economic chokehold,” warned an official from the Galle District Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “If these illegal barriers were removed, the entire region would see a boom in tourism and business.”
But those in power have yet to act.
Residents and business owners are now raising the alarm. From blocked entrances to chaotic vendor sprawl, Galle’s heritage core is under siege. They demand urgent action: clear the clutter, restore safe pedestrian routes, and protect the integrity of one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic cities.
The question lingers like a storm cloud over the city’s 17th-century fort walls: Will the government wake up before Galle is lost forever?
When Monkeys take over. Living in the Jungle is normal . One doesn’t see the difference between Beauty and Ugly , Clean and Unclean rule of law and jungle law. Due to this Primitive village attitude we in Sri Lanka are going backwards. This is just the beginning.
