The appointment of the Colombo Municipal Council members who contested and won in the recent local government election in Colombo has become problematic.
According to party sources, the appointment of these members will be delayed.
This issue has arisen due to an internal conflict within the United National Party.
However, this latest development appears to be advantageous for the National People’s Power Movement.
The reason is that the thirteen seats held by the United National Party are crucial for the opposition to secure power in the Colombo Municipal Council, where no single party has won a clear majority.
That said, since the National People’s Power Movement has won forty-eight seats, they do not require the support of the United National Party to pursue their objectives.
The Colombo Municipal Council consists of 117 councilors. To gain power in the assembly, a party or coalition must secure at least 60 seats.
In this election, the National People’s Power secured only 48 seats.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya won 29 seats, and the United National Party secured 13 seats.
Additionally:
- The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna won 5 seats
- The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress secured 4 seats
- Independent Group No. 03 won 3 seats
- The Sarva Jana Balaya Party secured 2 seats
- Independent Groups No. 04 and No. 05 also won 2 seats each
Moreover, the National Freedom Front, the Podujana Peramuna, the Democratic National Alliance, the National People’s Front, the United Republic Front, and other Independent Groups won 1 or 2 seats each.
