Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced that discussions are underway to deploy Sri Lankan health professionals, including doctors, abroad while continuing to build the country’s own healthcare workforce. He emphasized that the government has a duty to ensure that professionals trained with public funds benefit both local and international sectors.
Speaking at a ceremony where 85 graduates received appointment letters for roles in radiology and audiology, Dr. Jayatissa noted the growing global demand for healthcare workers and Sri Lanka’s need to integrate into this space. The 85 recruits — 74 Radiologists and 11 Audiologist Technicians — will undergo six months of training at the Kalutara National Institute of Health and various government health institutions. This marks the first recruitment of Audiologist Technicians in 11 years.
The Minister highlighted the need for stronger coordination among sectors like health, education, and trade, which have remained fragmented. He assured that the Ministry is taking steps to improve knowledge, training, and technological skill-sharing by strengthening international collaborations.
He also stated that while modern equipment is crucial, skilled human resources are even more valuable. Dr. Jayatissa reiterated his vision of creating a health service that reaches every citizen efficiently and invited health professionals to work together toward this goal.
Health Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena, and other officials were present at the event.
