More than half of the 90-day suspension period granted by former US President Donald Trump for implementing new tariff rates has now elapsed, but a much-anticipated joint statement between Sri Lanka and the United States has yet to materialize.
The countdown began on April 10, when President Trump postponed the enforcement of newly announced tariffs, giving Sri Lanka a 90-day window to resolve trade concerns and negotiate terms.
Despite initial optimism, no formal announcement has emerged from either side. Sri Lanka had dispatched a delegation to the US for discussions shortly after the suspension was announced. While the team returned briefly, they have since flown back to continue negotiations, indicating ongoing efforts behind closed doors.
With the clock ticking, the absence of a joint communiqué raises concerns over the fate of Sri Lanka’s key export sectors if an agreement isn’t finalized before the deadline.
