In a surprising show of cross-party support, a group of National People’s Power (NPP) MPs have come forward to back the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate for the mayoral post in the Colombo Municipal Council.
MP Mujibur Rahman stated that a section of the Malaima community traditionally seen as politically aligned with the NPP—is prepared to vote for the experienced candidate put forward by the SJB. He emphasized that the community recognizes the clear difference in capability between the candidate nominated by their own group and the seasoned individual selected by the SJB.
Rahman praised the SJB’s choice, noting that the nominee has served on the Colombo Municipal Council for 20 consecutive years and possesses an intimate understanding of the city’s administrative and civic challenges.
He stressed that electing someone with proven experience is essential to ensuring good governance and advancing the council’s performance. “What Colombo needs is not just a symbolic figure, but a mayor who truly understands the complex issues faced by its residents,” the MP said.
Rahman added that this cross-party endorsement represents a shared commitment to stable and effective urban governance, beyond partisan divisions.
