Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal has acknowledged that electricity bills are set to rise again, but insists the increase is not like previous ones meant to cover mismanagement or waste this time, he says, it’s for the country’s benefit.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the Kaduwela area, Jayalal stated, “Some increase will have to be made. That increase was opposed. This increase is being made for the good of the country. We request the people of the country to make some sacrifices for the people.”
Jayalal’s comments come amid growing concern over the rising cost of living and widespread frustration at recurring utility hikes.
Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission has confirmed that it is in the final stages of reviewing and setting electricity rates for the next six months. A formal announcement on the revised rates is expected within the coming days.
While no specifics on the percentage of the hike have been released, analysts warn that this could place added pressure on households already grappling with inflation and economic uncertainty.
Still, authorities continue to frame the increase as a necessary step toward stabilizing the power sector and ensuring long-term energy sustainability.
