A groundbreaking initiative titled ‘Elevate’ backed by UNFPA, Japan, and ADT is transforming the lives of over 2,000 women and youth across Sri Lanka. With a USD 5.29 million grant from Japan, the programme empowers vulnerable communities in 12 districts through projects focusing on gender equality, reproductive health, climate innovation, and social cohesion.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in partnership with the Government of Japan and the Alliance Development Trust (ADT), has launched a transformative programme called ‘Elevate’ to empower over 2,000 Sri Lankan women and youth. The programme focuses on critical areas including social cohesion, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health rights, and climate action.
The initiative, funded through Japan’s USD 5.29 million grant assistance, was officially launched at a ceremony held at the BMICH on Tuesday. It targets vulnerable women and young people in selected districts across Sri Lanka.
Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Eranga Gunasekara highlighted the strategic role of women and youth as catalysts for change. “Empowering women and youth is essential not just for opportunity creation, but for building a resilient and inclusive nation,” he said.
He further urged political organizations to guide the next generation through economic development and intergenerational cooperation. “As a ministry, we are committed to nation-building alongside our youth and women,” he stated.
The programme identifies Colombo, Trincomalee, and Gampaha among the districts for implementation, supported by partnerships with 11 local organizations across 12 districts.
Two major initiatives were introduced during the launch Social Cohesion Grants and Climate Innovation Grants. These projects aim to promote lasting change by enhancing resilience through gender equity, reproductive rights awareness, and sustainable environmental solutions.
Kenji Ohashi, First Secretary and Head of Economic and Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Japan, reaffirmed Japan’s continued dedication to community empowerment. “This partnership is about fostering inclusive development and strengthening the fabric of Sri Lankan society,” he said.
