Doctor’s Daughter Makes Death Threats to Bribery Commission During Bail Hearing
The Bribery Commission has formally informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga that the daughter of Dr. Maheshi Soorasinghe Wijeratne a specialist attached to Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital who is currently in remand allegedly issued death threats to its investigating officers.
The startling revelation was made in open court by Assistant Legal Director of the Bribery Commission, Sulochana Hettiarachchi. She claimed the threats were directed at officers actively investigating the case involving Dr. Wijeratne, who is facing corruption-related charges.
The threats reportedly occurred inside the courtroom itself, during a session where President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratne appeared on behalf of the suspect to submit a motion requesting bail for the detained doctor.
Assistant Director Hettiarachchi stated that the daughter’s conduct was aggressive and threatening while court proceedings were underway. The verbal threats were allegedly made in the presence of the Chief Magistrate and court staff, shocking those in attendance.
After hearing the complaint and reviewing the seriousness of the accusations, Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga ordered the Bribery Commission to file an official complaint with the Keselwatte Police Station regarding the death threats.
This development adds another explosive layer to the ongoing legal proceedings against Dr. Wijeratne, with growing attention on how both legal and law enforcement authorities will respond to threats made within court premises.
