(COLOMBO) – A drunken Sri Lankan police sergeant was relieved of his officially issued revolver and several live rounds of ammunition after he fell asleep on a sidewalk while waiting to board a public transport bus in the busy commercial capital of Colombo, police said on Tuesday.
The sergeant who has been suspended until further notice since then was attached to the security detail of a Member of Parliament.
Initially the sergeant was scheduled to escort the MP to his home but had to be left out of the squad vehicle owing to a space issue.
The MP had then instructed the sergeant to ride a bus to his home situated in the central town of Matale situated some 146 kilometres from Colombo.
Since there was time for a bus to Matale the sergeant had decided on a night cap that apparently went beyond night.
He subsequently woke up to find the bag containing the weapon and ammo missing and later reported the matter to the nearest police station.
The sergeant has been suspended until a disciplinary inquiry into his action is completed while police are scanning security camera footages that could lead to an arrest, a senior official said.
Colombo which is a busy trading post is on the other hand also notoriously known as the home for hundreds of criminal gangs that operate from the sleazy shanty dwellings that dot the area.
