Fertilizer shortage concerns grow as Namal Karunaratne says limited government stocks cannot meet the full demand from farmers.
Fertilizer shortage concerns have deepened after Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne said the government cannot provide the full quantity demanded by farmers.
Karunaratne stated that the government is unable to supply fertilizer according to the exact demand of farmers because available fertilizer stocks are limited.
He further said that some fertilizer remains in government warehouses and that steps are being taken to distribute all available stocks to farmers at regulated prices.
The Deputy Minister pointed out that the government is working to use existing fertilizer stocks in a controlled manner to support farmers during the current situation.
However, questions remain over whether the available stocks will be enough to meet cultivation needs across the country.
Karunaratne emphasized that due to limited stocks, it is difficult to provide fertilizer in the exact quantities demanded by farmers.
What happens next could be critical, as fertilizer availability may directly affect farmers, cultivation plans, and agricultural production in the coming season.
