Deputy Mayor of Kurunegala Municipal Council arrested by Bribery Commission while accepting Rs. 30 lakhs for cleaning tender. Court production tomorrow.
The Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, which is under the control of the National People’s Power, has been arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission in the Battaramulla area. The suspect was arrested while attempting to receive a bribe of Rs. 30 lakhs. It is reported that the Deputy Mayor had requested this bribe in exchange for awarding a tender for cleaning the Kurunegala bus stand and public toilets.
He had allegedly demanded a payment of Rs. 30 lakhs along with a monthly sum of Rs. 5 lakhs for awarding the tender. He was arrested while attempting to receive the Rs. 30 lakhs. Bribery Commission officers stated that the suspect Deputy Mayor will be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (09). The suspect was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council representing the All Ceylon Makkal Congress.
He was appointed as Deputy Mayor after extending his support to the National People’s Power when forming the council.
