Central Bank report shows Aswasuma welfare scheme spent Rs. 148.4 billion on 2 million families in 2025, up from Rs. 145.6 billion for 1.8 million families in 2024.
According to the latest annual economic review report released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, benefits under the Aswasuma welfare scheme were provided to approximately 2 million families during the past year 2025. The total amount spent by the government for this purpose was Rs. 148.4 billion. Compared to the year 2024, the report shows that both the number of beneficiary families and the expenditure incurred have increased. In 2024, Rs. 145.6 billion was spent for 1.8 million families.
The Aswasuma programme has also presented clear targeted plans for the coming years. It is expected to provide allowances to 1.92 million families in 2026 and early 2027. The Central Bank report further states that plans are also in place through this scheme to provide special allowances covering 1.27 million individuals, including persons with disabilities, chronic kidney disease patients, and senior citizens.
