Basil-style economic portfolio reportedly being discussed as government seeks opposition politicians after Treasury scandal.
Basil-style economic powers may be given to an opposition MP as the government explores moves to strengthen fiscal discipline, Weekend Lankadeepa reported.
According to the newspaper, discussions have begun within the government to bring in a group of skilled politicians from the opposition to reinforce the government’s economic management.
The move is reportedly being considered after the disappearance of US$ 2.5 million from the Treasury, an incident that has raised concerns over international confidence.
The special feature of the reported plan is the possibility of creating a new ministerial position for the first opposition MP who joins the government.
The proposed role is said to be a special economic affairs portfolio with powers similar to the Economic Development Minister position once held by Basil Rajapaksa.
The government is expected to bring one or more experienced opposition politicians into its ranks through this approach.
Reports indicate that discussions are already underway at some level regarding the appointment of an opposition politician to that position.
