National government talks are reportedly underway as AKD seeks opposition support amid economic pressure and Pelawatte resistance.
National government discussions are reportedly gaining momentum as President Anura Kumara Dissanayake considers a new governance structure amid the deepening economic crisis.
Political sources claim the President is preparing to move towards a national government or a similar arrangement by involving political groups and individuals from the opposition.
Former Provincial Council Member Waruna Rajapaksa said the President has now decided to move beyond the limitations imposed by leftist political groups centred around the Pelawatte headquarters.
He claimed that Dissanayake is preparing to begin a new political journey.
Rajapaksa further revealed that even Minister Vijitha Herath has been making telephone calls to officials who worked with Ranil Wickremesinghe’s staff.
He also claimed that Herath has reached out to activists of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to seek support for this new direction.
According to reports, attention has also been given to bringing skilled individuals from the opposition into key positions.
These include possible state corporation chairmanships and other responsibilities, in addition to wider parliamentary changes.
Meanwhile, speaking in Parliament, Sujiva Senasinghe also said the government has now fallen into serious difficulty.
He emphasized that Anura Kumara Dissanayake may have to invite the opposition to form a national government within the next four or five months.
Senasinghe warned that the economy is being damaged due to what he described as the government’s incompetence.
He further claimed that the value of the dollar could rise to Rs. 360 within the next five months.
Waruna Rajapaksa pointed out that the President had earlier rejected support from figures such as Sajith Premadasa and followed what he described as an arbitrary path.
However, he said the President is now changing that course.
As one step in the process, Rajapaksa claimed that an operation is underway through several leading businessmen to bring individuals from the opposition into the government’s new project.
He further stated that certain groups within the government, especially the Pelawatte faction, are opposing the inclusion of opposition figures.
According to him, this resistance could even create an explosion within the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
Rajapaksa said the success of this new measure being taken by the President to overcome the current crisis will be seen in the future.
He added that this comes at a time when even the Central Bank Governor has stated that the economic future remains uncertain.
