Police officers suspended after CID probe into millionaire businessman’s abduction and robbery of gold jewelry worth over Rs. 10 crore.
Police officers suspended over the alleged abduction of a millionaire businessman and robbery of gold jewellery worth over Rs. 10 crore are now in remand custody.
Steps have been taken to suspend eight police officers suspected of involvement in the incident while they were dressed in police uniform.
Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Udaya Kumara Wootler confirmed that the service of the officers is being suspended.
The officers are currently in remand custody.
Among those facing suspension are officers attached to several police stations.
They include a Police Inspector from Settikulama Police and two Sub-Inspectors from Kadugannawa and Wellawali Police Stations.
A Sergeant who served at Kobeigane Police is also among those facing suspension.
In addition, the service of four Police Constables attached to Sevanagala, Gampaha, Thalangama, and Badulla Police Stations is also to be suspended.
The crime took place on March 18, 2023.
At the time, the officers were serving in the Colombo North Divisional Crime Investigation Division.
They had allegedly abducted a millionaire businessman named Mohamed Rauf Mohamed Muad Ahmed.
The officers are accused of threatening to kill him and creating fear of death.
They then allegedly looted more than two kilograms of gold in his possession.
A lengthy investigation into the large-scale robbery was conducted by a special unit of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Based on the facts revealed through the investigation, the suspect police officers were arrested on the advice of the Attorney General.
They are currently in remand custody.
