Clean Sri Lanka model cities will be developed with digital services, eco-friendly planning, waste systems, and social value reforms.
Clean Sri Lanka model cities are being planned across the country to create socially responsible, environmentally friendly, and digitally connected urban centres.
Under the “Clean Sri Lanka” concept, plans are being prepared to develop new model cities that maintain high social and environmental standards.
These cities are also expected to be equipped with digital service facilities to serve the public more efficiently.
A meeting of the “Clean Sri Lanka” Task Force was held at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
Several important decisions regarding the model city development programme were reached at the meeting.
It was decided to obtain full technical assistance from the University of Moratuwa to implement the city development programme on a more practical and scientific basis.
At the same time, a special expert committee was appointed to prepare a set of guidelines in line with international standards on city design.
The committee will be headed by Dr. Sithumini Ratnamalala of the University of Moratuwa.
It will also include several active members of the “Clean Sri Lanka” Task Force and several experts in the field.
During the first phase of the project, several model cities are expected to be practically created based on the scientific guidelines prepared by this committee.
The committee will study successful city design models from around the world before preparing these guidelines.
After that, a scientific framework is expected to be prepared for modernizing other cities across the island.
The model city project will not be limited only to physical development.
In line with the core objectives of the “Clean Sri Lanka” national programme, special attention will also be given to transforming residents into a morally elevated community.
The aim is to build well-mannered urban communities that are rich in human and social values.
The programme also seeks to create communities that respect one another while living in a clean and eco-friendly urban environment.
In addition, a broad e-service network powered by modern technology is expected to be established within the cities.
This network is intended to provide essential services to the public quickly and transparently.
An expert committee has also been appointed to provide guidance on the scientific and systematic management of waste.
Plans are being made to implement these waste management guidelines across the island.
The event was attended by Mr. Russell Aponsu, Convener of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and Senior Additional Secretary to the President.
Directors of the Clean Sri Lanka office were also present.
Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, Commander of the Army, Air Marshal Wasu Bandu Edirisinghe, Commander of the Air Force, and Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, Commander of the Navy, also attended.
Members of the Clean Sri Lanka Task Force were also present at the meeting.
