The 2026 FIFA World Cup began with hosts Mexico delivering a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in a dramatic opening match that combined quality football with unprecedented disciplinary controversy.
Mexico looked the sharper side from the opening whistle, feeding off a passionate home crowd and dictating much of the tempo. The hosts created the better opportunities throughout the contest and were rewarded when Julián Quiñones etched his name into tournament history by scoring the first goal of the 2026 World Cup.
South Africa battled hard to stay in the contest but found themselves under increasing pressure as Mexico continued to push forward. The match took a decisive turn when South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, leaving his side facing an uphill battle against a confident Mexican team.
The situation worsened for the Africans before halftime when VAR intervened to review an off-the-ball incident involving Themba Zwane. After consulting the monitor, the referee upgraded the punishment to a straight red card for a strike to the face, reducing South Africa to nine men and effectively handing Mexico complete control of the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, South Africa continued to show determination, but Mexico’s superiority eventually told. Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez added a second goal to secure all three points and ensure the tournament hosts began their World Cup campaign in ideal fashion.
Mexico’s celebrations were slightly dampened in stoppage time when defender César Montes received a red card for a reckless challenge. However, the dismissal had little impact on the outcome as the hosts comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.
While the match entered the history books as the first FIFA World Cup opener to produce three red cards, the result itself was equally significant. Mexico not only claimed the tournament’s first victory but also produced an assured performance that will strengthen belief that they can make a deep run in front of their home supporters.
The goals from Quiñones and Jiménez ultimately decided the contest, but the combination of attacking football, VAR controversy and three dismissals ensured the 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway in unforgettable fashion.
