Jayakumar Thangavelu, celebrated police officer, boxer and entertainer, is showing improvement after a stroke as admirers continue to visit him.
Jayakumar Thangavelu, the former Deputy Inspector General of Police and Attorney-at-Law from Batticaloa, is remembered for a remarkable life of service, sport and character. He began his education at St. Michael’s College before moving to S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, becoming a proud Old Thomian, possibly from the same vintage as Anura Tennakoon.
Affectionately known as “Thanga,” he was a scientific boxer who brought distinction to S. Thomas’ College by winning numerous inter-school boxing championships, including the prestigious Stubbs Shield. He later advanced to represent Sri Lanka.
Thangavelu earned wide respect as one of the most straightforward police officers of his era. He was also regarded as a skilled investigator, an accomplished prosecutor and a man with an exceptional command of the English language.
Away from policing and the law, he was a delightful Baila entertainer whose performances brought happiness to many gatherings. He truly represented a rare breed of police officer.
Sadly, he suffered a stroke several years ago. Encouragingly, he is now showing signs of improvement. The many visitors who continue to call on him reflect the affection and respect he earned throughout his life. He remains a deeply admired and much-loved gentleman.
