A Borella parking violation involving a DIG’s son has sparked praise for a traffic officer and calls for an FCID inquiry into family assets.
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — A Borella parking violation involving the son of a Deputy Inspector General of Police has ignited nationwide debate over privilege and police integrity across Sri Lanka following the incident reported yesterday.
The unusual confrontation unfolded Tuesday morning near the Borella Eye Hospital, where a luxury Audi was parked beside local flower shops directly beneath Road Development Authority signs marking a strict no-parking zone.
A traffic police officer stationed at a nearby checkpoint approached the vehicle and instructed the driver to move it.
According to witnesses and reports circulating online, the young man inside allegedly tried to avoid legal consequences by referring to his father’s position as a Deputy Inspector General of Police, or DIG.
The officer reportedly refused to retreat, telling the driver that his father’s rank had no bearing on the offence and that his salary was paid by the state, not by the DIG. Observers said the driver initially had an opportunity to admit the mistake and leave before a citation was issued. Instead, after the brief standoff, the young man departed the scene amid visible embarrassment.
The officer’s firm adherence to procedure has attracted widespread praise across social media. In Sri Lanka, honest public servants have historically faced punitive or retaliatory transfers to remote areas after challenging well-connected individuals. However, online commentators expressed hope that existing legal protections and the changing political climate would prevent any administrative backlash against the officer.
The incident has also triggered wider questions about accountability and displays of wealth among senior public officials. Social media activists and anti-corruption critics are questioning how a career police officer could legally afford an expensive luxury vehicle for his son.
Pressure is now building online for the Financial Crimes Investigation Division, or FCID, to open a formal investigation into the family’s assets. Commentators said the driver’s behaviour has placed his father’s professional standing and long-established reputation under intense public scrutiny.
