Bribery Commission investigations now target 10 sons of former ministers over alleged corruption, irregularities and underworld links.
The Bribery Commission has launched investigations into ten sons of former ministers accused of bribery, corruption and various irregularities, with steps reportedly taken to prevent them from leaving the country.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption is conducting the probe together with several investigative units, including the Criminal Investigation Department.
A senior police officer told “Lankadeepa” that investigations are also underway into several sons of ministers who allegedly maintained connections with the underworld.
It is reported that necessary measures have already been taken to prevent these individuals from fleeing overseas while investigations continue.
Three sons of politicians, including former ministers, have already been arrested in connection with various corruption allegations and dealings linked to the underworld.
Among those recently arrested on a bribery charge was Rakitha Rajapaksa, the son of former Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa.
Investigations have revealed that many of these ministerial sons allegedly used their fathers’ power during previous governments to carry out various corrupt and irregular activities.
CID sources said information has also emerged that, in some cases, the former minister fathers directly assisted these activities. Accordingly, statements are expected to be recorded from those former ministers.
The sources further stated that arrests will be made after additional evidence is gathered regarding the individuals under investigation.
Some ministerial sons are alleged to have committed corrupt and irregular acts while operating through various positions obtained with the patronage of their fathers, who were former ministers.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption also stated that investigations have been launched into a group of relatives of former ministers facing various corruption allegations.
