Sri Lanka wellness tourism has topped the 2026 global retreats index, driven by Ayurveda, yoga, visa-free access and affordable packages.
Sri Lanka wellness tourism has received a major global boost after the country was ranked the world’s fastest-growing wellness travel destination for 2026, taking the top position.
According to the latest “State of Retreats 2026” report released by BookRetreats.com, Sri Lanka claimed first place as the world’s leading wellness destination for the year.
Interest shown by travellers toward Sri Lanka through the website recorded remarkable growth of 100 percent compared to the previous year, making the island the fastest-growing wellness travel destination in the world.
Among the top 10 countries listed in the global index, Nepal, ranked sixth, and Thailand, ranked seventh, were also included from the Asian region.
The report was compiled based on a survey conducted among 1,040 travellers from the United States.
It revealed that 49 percent of those surveyed plan to spend money on a wellness retreat in 2026.
This clearly reflects a global shift toward travel that goes beyond traditional leisure holidays and focuses more strongly on physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
Sri Lanka’s Ayurveda heritage, which spans more than 2,000 years, has been identified as the main reason behind this growing attraction.
The availability of doctor-supervised Ayurvedic treatments, yoga classes and complete wellness experiences at competitive prices is also a distinctive strength for the country.
According to BookRetreats.com, a three-to-four-day wellness travel package in Sri Lanka starts from a minimum of around US$372.
The recently introduced tourist-friendly policies in Sri Lanka have also contributed strongly to this recognition.
The government’s decision to waive visa fees for travellers from 40 countries, effective from May 25, 2026, has made Sri Lanka a more accessible destination for international visitors.
“In addition to reasonable prices, the presence of two monsoon weather patterns ensures that one coastline of Sri Lanka enjoys good sunshine at any time of the year. Furthermore, opportunities to observe wild elephants and blue whales also exist in the country, so wellness travellers have plenty to enjoy in Sri Lanka beyond yoga and medicinal treatments,” the report stated.
The global wellness tourism industry is expanding rapidly, and the Global Wellness Institute predicts that the value of the sector will rise to US$1.4 trillion by 2027.
