A British influencer’s murder case in Dubai has ignited an international legal battle, with claims of self-defense, allegations of abuse, and the possibility of the death penalty drawing global attention.
A British social media influencer faces a potential death penalty by firing squad in Dubai after being charged with the premeditated murder of a British man.
Brooke George, 23, of Gravesend, Kent, was arrested by Dubai police on June 22. Authorities allege the former retail worker turned TikTok influencer killed a 26-year-old British man whom she met on Facebook before traveling to the United Arab Emirates. Under UAE law, a premeditated murder conviction carries a maximum sentence of death by firing squad.
Legal advocacy group Detained in Dubai is working on the case, asserting that the stabbing was an act of self-defense. According to the organization and George’s family, the relationship became severely abusive during her second visit to the country. Family members stated the man became controlling, confiscated her passport, and purchased her a one-way ticket, causing her to fear she was being held captive.
The fatal altercation reportedly occurred after the man repeatedly punched and assaulted George. Her family said she returned to the apartment only to retrieve her passport so she could flee back to the United Kingdom. When the assault resumed, she allegedly used a kitchen knife to defend herself.
Police intercepted George at the airport while she was in shock and showing visible physical injuries.
Human rights advocates have raised concerns over her treatment at the Bur Dubai Police Station, citing a lack of early legal counsel, language barriers, and limited access to British consular officials.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is communicating with local authorities and supporting the family while the investigation continues.
