Mbappe penalty sends France past Paraguay 1-0 and into a World Cup quarter-final against Morocco after a tense knockout clash.
Mbappe penalty drama decided a tense World Cup knockout battle as France edged Paraguay 1-0 in Philadelphia to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
It was not the smooth statement many expected from one of the tournament favourites. However, Didier Deschamps’ side did enough to survive a difficult Round of 16 test and keep their title hopes alive.
Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Paraguay defended with discipline, disrupted France’s rhythm and forced Les Bleus to work hard for every opening before the French captain finally broke the deadlock.
The penalty came after VAR confirmed a foul on Désiré Doué inside the box. Mbappé stepped up under pressure and converted with the calm expected from one of football’s most ruthless big-match forwards. That moment ended Paraguay’s brave World Cup run and sent France into a quarter-final showdown against Morocco.
Mbappe Penalty Breaks Paraguay Resistance
Paraguay entered the match carrying the emotional force of their stunning win over Germany in the previous round. That result had shocked the tournament and sparked national celebrations back home.
Against France, Paraguay again trusted organisation, physicality and defensive resistance. Their plan was clear. They wanted to drag one of the favourites into another uncomfortable contest and make every French attack feel difficult.
For long stretches, the plan worked.
France controlled possession and gained territory, but Paraguay closed the central spaces and slowed the tempo whenever possible. The French attack had looked explosive earlier in the tournament, but it lacked its usual sharpness in the final third.
Mbappé, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé all carried threat. Still, clear chances were harder to find than expected. Paraguay’s defensive shape forced France wide, delayed their passing rhythm and kept the match alive deep into the second half.
The contest also became increasingly tense. Reports described a physical and contentious match, with Paraguay’s disruptive approach frustrating France and raising questions about the officiating. Still, France kept pushing until VAR finally gave them the opening they needed.
France Survive, But Questions Remain
The Mbappe penalty also marked another personal milestone in a tournament where he remains central to France’s ambitions. Al Jazeera reported that the strike moved him level with Lionel Messi on seven goals at the 2026 World Cup, strengthening his place as one of the defining figures of the competition.
Paraguay did not collapse after falling behind. They continued to fight, pressed late and searched for one final chance to force extra time. But France’s defence held firm, and Deschamps’ side managed the closing stages with enough composure to protect their narrow lead.
The performance, however, will not erase every concern. France advanced, but they did not overwhelm Paraguay. After several dominant displays earlier in the tournament, this narrow win showed that even the strongest teams can be pulled into uncomfortable knockout matches.
Still, champions are often judged by survival as much as style.
France survived. Paraguay are out. The reward is a heavyweight quarter-final against Morocco, a team full of confidence after its 3-0 win over Canada.
For France, the dream remains alive. But against Morocco, they may need far more than one moment from Mbappé.
