A Negombo Prison clash between two groups of inmates left two people dead and 27 others injured on Sunday afternoon (05), prompting authorities to deploy the Police Special Task Force.
Initial police reports said 20 prisoners had suffered injuries during the violent unrest. Three of them were reportedly in serious condition.
The Director of the Negombo Hospital initially confirmed that all 20 prisoners injured in the prison violence had been admitted for treatment.
However, subsequent information from hospital sources placed the number of injured prisoners at 27. The bodies of the two people killed in the violence were also taken to the Negombo Hospital.
As the Negombo Prison clash intensified, authorities immediately deployed police officers from Negombo and surrounding stations. The Police Special Task Force was also called in to restore order inside the prison.
Security around the prison premises was tightened as police and STF personnel moved to control the situation and prevent further violence.
Authorities later confirmed that security forces had brought the situation under control.
The cause of the confrontation between the two inmate groups has not yet been definitively established. Officials have also not released further details about the circumstances that triggered the deadly violence.
The Prisons Department and police have now launched a wide-ranging joint investigation into the incident.
