Namal Rajapaksa urges Sajith Premadasa to unite democratic parties against government moves to extend the judges retirement age.
The judges retirement age debate has prompted Namal Rajapaksa to call on Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to unite democratic political parties against the proposed move.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organizer asked Premadasa to convene a discussion on attempts to arbitrarily extend the retirement age or service period of Supreme Court judges.
In a special letter to the Opposition Leader, Rajapaksa argued that the government had no reasonable justification for extending the judges’ service period. He described the move as a severe blow to the country’s rule of law and democratic process.

The letter stated that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and international legal organizations had already opposed the situation. Rajapaksa said all parties that value the rule of law should unite and build a strong common position against the move.
Accordingly, Rajapaksa asked the Opposition Leader to organize an urgent meeting to discuss the matter. He called for the participation of leaders from all political parties that value democracy, including parties represented in Parliament and those without parliamentary representation.
Rajapaksa also stressed the urgency of the issue. He concluded the letter by emphasizing that he expected the Opposition Leader to give the serious matter his immediate attention.
