Argentina vs Egypt produced a stunning World Cup comeback as the defending champions fought from two goals down to win 3-2 in Atlanta.
Argentina survived one of their biggest scares of the FIFA World Cup after Egypt pushed them to the brink in a dramatic Round of 16 clash.
The defending champions looked close to elimination after falling behind by two goals. However, Argentina responded with the mentality of champions, scoring three late goals to keep their title defence alive and reach the quarterfinals.
Egypt stunned Argentina in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring. The early goal lifted Egypt’s confidence and forced Lionel Messi’s side into an uncomfortable position. Instead of controlling the match, Argentina had to chase it.
Argentina created chances to answer, but Egypt’s defensive discipline and fast counter-attacking threat disrupted their rhythm. Messi also missed a first-half penalty, which added more pressure to an already tense night for the reigning champions.
Egypt then doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Mostafa Zico. At 2-0, Argentina vs Egypt looked set to become one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. Egypt appeared close to one of the greatest results in their football history.
But Argentina refused to fold.
Cristian Romero pulled one goal back in the 79th minute, giving Argentina belief and changing the mood of the match. Just four minutes later, Messi made up for his earlier penalty miss by scoring the equaliser in the 83rd minute.
With Egypt suddenly under pressure, Argentina pushed hard for the winner. Their persistence paid off in stoppage time when Enzo Fernández scored the decisive goal to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback.
The result keeps Argentina’s World Cup dream alive. However, it also raises serious questions about their defensive stability. Egypt exposed weaknesses in transition and forced Argentina into one of their most uncomfortable matches of the tournament.
For Egypt, the defeat will hurt deeply. They played with discipline, courage and belief, coming within minutes of eliminating the defending champions. However, Argentina’s late surge proved too powerful.
Argentina now move into the quarterfinals, where they will face Switzerland. After surviving Argentina vs Egypt, the champions know they must improve if they want to continue their push for another World Cup title.
