Zverev reaches Wimbledon final after defeating British wildcard Arthur Fery in straight sets, ending his remarkable run at the All England Club.
LONDON, England: Zverev defeated the 23-year-old home favourite 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 in Friday’s men’s singles semi-final.
The second-seeded German needed two hours and 14 minutes to secure his first championship match at the All England Club. He will return to Centre Court for Sunday’s final.
Fery entered the tournament outside the world’s top 100 after receiving a wildcard into the main draw. However, fearless tennis and impressive composure carried him into his first Grand Slam semi-final.
Zverev’s experience, powerful serve and relentless baseline game eventually proved too strong.
Zverev Reaches Wimbledon Final After Tense Opener
The opening set gave Fery his best chance to take control. Backed by a passionate Centre Court crowd, the British player stayed level throughout a closely fought contest.
Neither player found a decisive advantage before the set moved into a tiebreak. Zverev then raised his level sharply and won all seven points.
The flawless breaker silenced the crowd and handed the German the opening set. It also changed the direction of the match.
With the pressure easing, Zverev attacked Fery’s second serve and controlled rallies with his heavy groundstrokes. He broke twice in a dominant second set and offered Fery few opportunities to recover.
Fery continued fighting bravely in the third set. He tried to shorten rallies, move forward and draw energy from the crowd.
However, Zverev stayed composed. He claimed the decisive break and then served out the victory as Zverev reaches Wimbledon final for the first time.
The players shared a warm embrace at the net. Centre Court then rose to recognise Fery’s historic campaign and his remarkable two-week performance.
Fery Leaves Wimbledon With Career Transformed
Despite the defeat, Fery leaves Wimbledon with his career transformed. His semi-final appearance should deliver a major rankings rise. His performances have also established him as a leading new figure in British men’s tennis.
Thousands of supporters gathered around Wimbledon’s Aorangi Terrace. Fans temporarily nicknamed the area “Arthur’s Seat” as they watched the match on the tournament’s large outdoor screen.
The area reportedly reached capacity as public enthusiasm surrounding Fery’s unexpected journey continued to grow.
For Zverev, the victory marks another major milestone in an increasingly successful season. The reigning French Open champion will now try to complete a rare Roland-Garros and Wimbledon double.
He also becomes the first German man to reach the Wimbledon singles final since Boris Becker in 1995.
The 29-year-old will face defending champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Sunday. The Italian defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final.
Fery’s championship dream has ended. However, his unexpected Wimbledon run ensured that tennis supporters will remember his name long after the tournament ends.
