The Central Province Governor appointment will be finalized before midnight on July 21, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reviewing a shortlist of prominent candidates.
Following the resignation of Central Province Governor Professor Sarath Abeykoon, which was officially tendered to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, several prominent names have emerged as frontrunners for the vacant position.
Speaking to the media, Professor Abeykoon confirmed that he will step down from the role after July 21.
Amidst these developments, intense behind-the-scenes discussions are underway. The names being circulated include individuals closely connected to the “Malima” (National People’s Power – NPP) administration in Kandy, as well as several national-level political figures.
Reports indicate that particular attention is being focused on a well-known young social activist and entrepreneur from Kandy who played a major role in bringing the current government to power. His name has also been officially forwarded to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for consideration.
The high-level political authority of the Malima government overseeing Central Province affairs is currently reviewing the nominees to select the most suitable candidate. According to sources, President Dissanayake is expected to announce the new appointment before midnight on July 21st, exercising the powers vested in the presidency.
The incoming Central Province Governor is reportedly an individual who commands the blessings of the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters. The immediate and most significant responsibility awaiting the new Governor will be overseeing the successful execution of the 2026 Esala Perahera festival.
