There are moments in life when words feel too small for the weight of what the heart carries.
There are moments when grief stands before us, silent and heavy, and yet hope rises beside it.
For our family, that moment came as the mortal remains of our beloved father, Melville Bernard Ferreira, were laid to rest. We stood there with tears in our eyes, sorrow in our hearts, and yet with a deep and blessed assurance that this farewell was not the end.
Because our father was not merely a man who lived.
He was a man who believed.
He was a Christian believer whose life bore witness to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God did not merely visit his life in words or in Sunday expressions of faith. The Spirit of God dwelt in him and was made visible in the way he walked, the way he spoke, the way he served, and the way he loved.
His faith was not loud.
It was steady.
His faith was not performed.
It was lived.
A Life That Bore Fruit
The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:22-23:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”
Those nine fruits were not abstract words in our father’s life.
They were visible.
We saw love in the way he cared. We saw joy in the quiet contentment he carried. We saw peace in the way he lived without bitterness. We saw patience in his dealings with others. We saw gentleness in his words. We saw goodness in his actions. We saw faith in his walk with God. We saw meekness in his humility. We saw self-control in the dignity with which he conducted himself.
In a world where many speak more than they live, he lived more than he spoke.
In a world where many chase attention, he chose simplicity.
In a world where many measure success by possessions, he measured life by peace, love, honour and faith.
A Gentleman Loved By Many
Our father was loved by many.
That was not something we had to announce. It was something we saw.
We saw it in the faces that came to pay their final respects. We heard it in the words spoken by family, friends and acquaintances. We felt it in the quiet reverence of those who stood before him one last time.
They came from different walks of life. They came with different titles, different professions and different memories. Yet their words carried one message.
He was a good man.
Some called him a perfect gentleman right to his fingertips.
And in those words, we heard not flattery, but truth.
For here was a man whose words matched his actions. He did not speak ill of others. We never heard him use crude or hurtful language. He did not live with greed. He did not carry himself with pride. He did not need the noise of the world to prove the worth of his life.
He lived simply.
And in that simplicity, he lived richly.
He Sought First The Kingdom
Our father lived 88 years with his needs being met.
Not because he desired much, but because he wanted little.
His life reminded us of Philippians 4:19:
“But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
That promise echoed through his life.
He did not live as a man consumed by wants. He lived as a man content with what God provided. His simple life became a testimony that peace is not found in having everything, but in trusting the One who provides everything we truly need.
He also lived out the words of Matthew 6:33:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
He did not need to preach that verse loudly.
He lived it quietly.
And because he lived it, we saw it.
He Ran A Good Race
As we laid him to rest, one scripture gave shape to our grief and strength to our hope.
2 Timothy 4:7 declares:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Our father ran a good race.
He did not run it for applause. He did not run it for recognition. He did not run it to be seen by men. He ran it with humility, discipline, faith and love.
He ran it as a husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend and a servant of his country.
He ran it through quiet choices. Through gentle words. Through faithful service. Through kindness shown when no one was watching. Through a life that did not demand attention, but earned respect.
And when that race was complete, he left behind something more valuable than wealth.
He left behind a good name.
As Proverbs 22:1 reminds us:
“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
Our father leaves behind that good name.
A name spoken with love.
A name remembered with honour.
A name carried by his children, grandchildren, and by the generations yet to come.
A Farewell Worthy Of His Life
The viewing held before his burial and the final farewell at the cemetery revealed the measure of the man.
Men and women from many walks of life came to pay their respects. Among them were religious leaders, including the Anglican Bishop of Colombo, political figures of national standing, legal professionals, national and international sporting personalities, architects, military officers, airline professionals and many others from different trades and backgrounds.
They did not come because he had sought power.
They did not come because he had demanded attention.
They came because character still matters.
They came because kindness leaves a mark.
They came because a simple, good and faithful man had touched lives in ways that no title could fully explain.
It was a fitting farewell to a man loved by many.
The Navy’s Final Honour
Our father served in the Sri Lanka Navy for 22 years before his retirement.
And at his burial, the Sri Lanka Navy honoured him with a ceremonial farewell that our family will never forget.
The moment was solemn. It was dignified. It was spine-chilling.
The ceremonial gun salute, the bugle call, the folding of the national flag that had draped his coffin, the reading of his life story and service journey, and the handing over of the folded flag and ceremonial items to his wife were carried out with deep respect.
In that moment, we were reminded that he was not only our father.
He was also a man who had served his country.
The Sri Lanka Navy conducted the ceremony with remarkable precision and honour. From start to finish, their tribute was meticulous, disciplined and deeply moving.
As a family, we are profoundly grateful.
They gave our loved one a farewell worthy of his service.
They honoured him with dignity.
And for that, we will always remain thankful.
The Lessons He Leaves Behind
But the greatest memorial to our father will not be in the words spoken at his funeral.
It will be in the lives we now choose to live.
His life teaches us that happiness is not found in noise, pride, wealth or endless desire. It is found in peace with God, love for family, respect for others, simplicity of heart and faithfulness in the small things.
He taught us that gentleness is strength.
He taught us that contentment is wealth.
He taught us that silence can carry dignity.
He taught us that a good name is built not in one grand moment, but in a lifetime of daily choices.
For us, his children and grandchildren, his life now becomes both memory and instruction.
We must carry forward what he showed us. We must learn to speak kindly. We must live peacefully. We must avoid bitterness. We must seek first the kingdom of God. We must let our words match our actions.
And his legacy will not end with those of us who saw him, knew him and loved him.
It will continue into the life of his great-grandchild, already conceived and expected to be born in January 2027.
That child may not meet him on this earth.
But that child will hear of him.
That child will hear of a great-grandfather who lived simply, loved deeply, served faithfully and ran a good race.
That child will inherit not merely a family name, but a testimony.
A testimony that a life rooted in God can still speak long after the voice has fallen silent.
Today, We Celebrate a Life Well Lived
Today, we choose to celebrate.
We celebrate a life of 88 years filled with love, faith, humility, honour and quiet strength.
We celebrate a father whose life touched many, whose example continues to guide us, and whose faith was reflected not merely in words, but in the fruit of the life he lived.
The Word of God reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14:
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
These words give us not only comfort, but confidence.
They remind us that for those who belong to Christ, death is not the end of the story.
Our father has completed his earthly journey. He has run his race, kept his faith and left behind a legacy of love, dignity, kindness and peace.
And so today, rather than allowing sorrow to define this moment, we give thanks.
We give thanks for 88 precious years of life.
We give thanks for the privilege of calling him our father.
We give thanks for the love he gave so freely.
We give thanks for the values he instilled in us.
We give thanks for the faith he carried throughout his life.
And above all, we give thanks for the blessed assurance that, in Christ, farewell is never forever.
By the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we believe that one day we will meet him again.
Today also marks exactly one month since our father went to be with the Lord.
As I reflect on this first month without him, I find myself appreciating even more deeply the influence he had on my life. The values he lived by, the example he set, and the quiet strength with which he carried himself helped shape the man I became.
As a father to my three sons, Dwayne, Jayden and Jonathan, I now understand even more clearly the responsibility, love and sacrifice that come with fatherhood. In many ways, the lessons my father gave me continue through the way I try to guide and care for my own children.
His presence may no longer be with us physically, but his influence remains woven into our lives, our family and the generations that follow.
So today, I do not want to remember him only through the sadness of his absence.
I want to celebrate the blessing of having had him.
I want to celebrate his life, his faith, his love and the memories that no passage of time can take away.
And while I miss my earthly father deeply, my heart is filled with peace knowing that he is now safely in the loving arms of my Heavenly Father.
Today is therefore not simply a day of remembrance.
It is a day of gratitude.
It is a day of faith.
And above all, it is a day to celebrate a father whose life will forever remain a blessing to us.
